Blogs and Traffic

Blogs and Traffic: Blogs, especially blogger blogs, are indexed pretty promptly by Google and are spidered often.

These means that any post you make on a blogger blog has a pretty decent chance of being indexed within a week.

The goldmine in this is obviously with regards to backlinks to your other websites. If you have a website in the same niche as your blog, putting a backlink from your blog to your website is a good way of generating some ranking with the search engines.

You must try and use anchor tags as far as possible and vary your links

Blogs and affiliate links: You can put affiliate links in your posts. there is nothing to stop you from doing this and having a blog allows you to informally review a product that you are actually promoting. If you are using affiliate links on your blog, i highly recommend that you cloak them or someone could steal your commissions. [Unfortunately, commission theft is still around]

Blogs and adsense: Talk about made for each other. You should have adsense displayed on your blogs. Google likes sites that have frequently updated content. Your blog, with new posts added from time to time, fits the bill. You must however remember to post to your blog from time to time. I suggest every week at the least.

A good blog with frequently renewed content, will rank highly with the search engines. High ranking means more traffic and the easiest way to monetize your traffic is adsense.

When you place adsense blocks on your blog, remember to blend them in. That is you need to make your adsense blocks similar in appearance to the content of your blog.

Although it is tempting to load your blog with banners and pop ups, i suggest you don't. You do not want your blog to look too commercial or you will turn your visitors off

A nice personalized blog with some adsense and affiliate text links within the body of your posts is the way to go

Increase Traffic to Your Blog (No Wallet) - Crucial Lesson For Blogging Beginners

By Abi Noah

So you now have your blog up and running and your Google AdSense blocks and affiliate links in place. The crucial step is getting people to actually visit your blog. And we are not talking about just any old traffic, we are talking about targeted traffic.

It is only visitors that are actually interested in your niche that you want to attract to your blog.

So how do you get targeted traffic to your blog?

Keyword optimization: You need to identify the keywords that are relevant to your visitors and optimize your posts for these keywords. If you can get you blog to rank well in the search engines for the right keywords, you will get the right type of traffic to your webpages

Generate Backlinks To your Blog: Several ways to do this but the most effective are

1. Linkbait. Write well researched, authoritative and informative posts on your blog. Let each post be an education for your visitors. Be so comprehensive in each post that other webmasters will want to link to you. A few keynote posts is all it takes to generate tons of interest in your blog.
2. Article marketing: Write interesting articles on some aspect of your niche and distribute them on article directories. The articles biobox allows you to include a link to your blog. Again if your articles are informative, you will in no time generate a bunch of backlinks to your sites

Social bookmarking: These sites are places where you can bookmark a URL that you have found useful and post comments on them. You can bookmark your blog and let the world know what you are about. The social bookmarking sites are at the moment very popular and therefore a great source of traffic. Just make sure that you bookmark your URL in the right category so that the visitors you get are targeted.

Social Networking: In order to get people to take your content seriously, you need to establish a relationship with them. An effective way of achieving this is via social networking. Now there are tons of networking sites on the internet, some are niche specific and others not. Your choice of social networking site really depends on what niche your blog is on and what level you are marketing to.

Blog directories: Blog directories are like any other directory only they are specifically for blogs. People actually do use blog directories to find blogs in their area of interest. Again it is important to submit your blog to the right category for this to work.

RSS feeds and Pings: A really easy and often overlooked service is pinging your posts. It is amazing how often bloggers forget to ping their posts. You should ping after every new post on your blog. Pinging is a method of sending out signals to servers across the net that there is new content on your blog. If you have syndicated your blog using RSS feeds, these feeds are updated to reflect your new content.

So now you have a few effective and reasonably straight forward methods of increasing traffic to your blog.

Secret Search Engine Optimization Strategies: How to Turn Keywords into Conversions

by: Derek Gehl

Are you focusing your search engine optimization efforts on getting tons of traffic from the search engines?

If you answered yes, then I am about to tell you something completely different from other Internet Marketers.

Forget about getting tons of traffic from the search engines. Get LESS traffic that converts MORE!

The Secret to Turning Keywords into Conversions is to Keep Your Keywords Focused

For example, if your site sells an all-natural remedy for acid stomach problems...

You start to do your keyword research and you discover that the keyword phrase "natural remedies" has 288 daily searches. But it has over 2,000,000 sites competing for it.

While the phrase, "acid reflux natural remedies" has 67 daily searches with just over 11,000 competing sites.

Do you want to spend all your time and effort trying to optimize your website for the first keyword phrase?

You may get more searches, but you'll never know how many of those searchers want to buy your stomach acid remedy. Not to mention the HUGE number of competitors the keyword has!

Or would you go for the second term, which only has 67 people searching for it -- knowing those 67 people are looking for EXACTLY what you offer? And, it has a MUCH lower competition number to boot!

Obviously, the second term is better!

Sure, you might get less traffic -- but the visitors you DO get will be MUCH more likely to buy your product.

Why You Will Make More Money with Less Traffic That Converts More

People search the Internet to find a solution to a problem and not necessarily to buy something. So what problems will they solve by coming to your website?

Think of a keyword as a "problem statement" that someone would type into the search engines.

When you can match your keywords to the exact problems they're trying to solve. You'll attract the BEST visitors to your site so you can focus all your optimization efforts on them!

Here are some more keyword research tips that will help you turn keywords into conversions…

Top Search Engine Optimization Tips for Finding Highly Focused Keywords That Will Bring the Absolute Best Buyers to Your Website:

Check your server logs. See what keyword phrases people are actually using to find your site. If there's something relevant that you've overlooked, build a page focused on that keyword phrase.

Also look for keywords that are causing people to leave right away because they're not finding what they're looking for. Ditch those keywords immediately.

Look for "intention." Say you sell cross-country ski equipment. People can come to your website looking for different things.

For instance:
They're looking to buy a specific product
They're looking for product reviews
They want information on how to get started in cross-country skiing
They want used or discount equipment
They want to know what kind of equipment will be best for them
They want to know what's new and hot in cross-country ski equipment

Same products -- far different intentions!

If you optimize a page (or pages) for each different problem people are trying to solve, you'll give them what they're looking for…

That means they'll stay on your site longer -- and you'll have a better chance of getting them into the sales process.

Check out your competition. What keywords are your competitors optimizing for, and on what pages?

You can spy on them by going to their websites and looking at their code!

In your web browser, just go to View on the main menu and click on Source or Page Source to "look under the hood" of any competitor's site. Then you can see what they're doing right and what you could do better.

Find your best keywords with pay-per-click advertising. This is the fastest way to find out just how well different keywords perform.

Pay-per-click lets you run ads based on two or three different keywords at the same time. This enables you can track which ones convert best. Make sure the ads click through to pages that relate directly to the keywords.

Focus your SEO efforts on the specific keywords that describe EXACTLY what problem each page solves. Don't be tempted by more general keywords with higher traffic numbers. They'll never send you the traffic you want.

Follow these search engine optimization tips and you will turn keywords into conversions.

A Guide on RSS Tool

by: Terry Leslie

RSS is an abbreviation that has evolved into the following, depending on their versions:

• RDF Site Summary (also known as RSS 0.9; the first version of RSS)
• Rich Site Summary (also known as RSS 0.91; a prototype)
• Really Simple Syndication (also known as RSS 2.0)

Today, RSS stands for 'Really Simple Syndication', and it has the following 7 existing formats or versions:

• 0.90
• 0.91
• 0.92
• 0.93
• 0.94
• 1.0
• 2.0

RSS tools refer to a group of file formats that are designed to share headlines and other web content (this may be a summary or simply 1 to 2 lines of the article), links to the full versions of the content (the full article or post), and even file attachments such as multimedia files. All of these data is delivered in the form of an XML file (XML stands for eXtensible Markup Language), which has the following common names:

• RSS feed
• Webfeed
• RSS stream
• RSS channel

They are typically shown on web pages as an orange rectangle that usually has the letters XML or RSS in it.

RSS feeds can be used to deliver any kind of information. Some of these 'feeds' include:

• Blogs feed - each blog entry is summarized as a feed item. This makes blog posts easier to scan, enabling 'visitors' to zoom in on their items of interest.

• Article feed - this alerts readers whenever there are new articles and web contents available.

• Forum feed - this allows users to receive forum posts and latest discussion topics.

• Schedule feed - this allows users (such as schools, clubs, and other organizations) to broadcast events and announce schedule changes or meeting agendas.

• Discounts or Special feed - this is used to enable users (such as retail and online stores) to 'deliver' latest specials and discounted offers.

• Ego or News Monitoring - this enables users to receive 'filtered' headlines or news that are based on a specific phrase or keyword.

• Industry-specific feed - used by technical professionals in order to market, promote, or communicate with current (and prospective) customers and clients within their specific industries.

RSS feeds enable people to track numerous blogs and news sources at the same time. To produce an RSS feed, all you need is the content or the article that you want to publicize and a validated RSS text file. Once your text file is registered at various aggregators (or 'news readers'), any external site can then capture and display your RSS feed, automatically updating them whenever you update your RSS file.

RSS tools are useful for sites that add or modify their contents on a regular basis. They are especially used for 'web syndication' or activities that involve regular updates and/or publications, such as the following:

• News websites - as used by major news organizations such as Reuters, CNN, and the BBC.
• Marketing
• Bug reports
• Personal weblogs

There are many benefits to using RSS feeds. Aside from being a great supplemental communication method that streamlines the communication needs of various sectors, RSS tools and feeds can also have tremendous benefits in your business, particularly in the field of internet marketing.

RSS tools and feeds provide Internet users with a free (or cheap) and easy advertising or online marketing opportunity for their businesses. Below are some of the RSS features that can help make your internet marketing strategies more effective.

1. Ease in content distribution services. With RSS, your business can be captured and displayed by virtually any external site, giving you an easy way to 'spread out' and advertise them.

2. Ease in regular content updates. With RSS, web contents concerning your business can now be automatically updated on a daily (and even hourly) basis. Internet users will be able to experience 'real time' updates as information in your own file (such as new products and other business-related releases) is changed and modified simultaneously with that of the RSS feeds that people are subscribed to.

3. Custom-made content services. With RSS, visitors can have personalized content services, allowing them total control of the flow and type of information that they receive. Depending on their interests and needs, visitors can subscribe to only those contents that they are looking for (such as real estate or job listings).

4. Increase in (and targeted) traffic. With RSS, traffic will be directed to your site as readers of your content summary (or 1 to 2 lines of your article) who find them interesting are 'forced' to click on a link back to your site.

These are just several of the many things that you can do with RSS. The possibilities are endless, and they are all aimed at providing you with an effective internet marketing strategy for your business.

A Guide to RSS Aggregators

by: Terry Leslie

One of the most popular features of Internet portals, websites, pages and even emails is a frame that features an organized list of news headlines and periodic updates from other web sources. Really Simple Syndication, formerly “Rich Site Summary” or simply, RSS makes this possible.

Most users visit a lot of websites whose content continually change, such as news sites, community organization or professional association information pages, medical websites, product support pages, and blogs. As Internet surfing became an intrinsic part of business and leisure, it became important to get rid of the very tedious task of repeatedly returning to each website to see updated content.

RSS easily distributes information from different websites to a wider number of Internet users. RSS aggregators are programs that use RSS to source these updates, and then organize those lists of headlines, content and notices for easy reading. It allows computers to automatically retrieve and read the content that users want, then track changes and personalize lists of headlines that interests them.

The specially made computer programs called “RSS aggregators” were created to automatically find and retrieve the RSS feeds of pre-selected internet sites on behalf of the user and organize the results accordingly. (RSS feeds and aggregators are also sometimes referred to as "RSS Channels" and "RSS Readers".)

The RSS aggregator is like a web browser for RSS content. HTML presents information directly to users, and RSS automatically lets computers communicate with one another. While users use browsers to surf the web then load and view each page of interest, RSS aggregators keeps track of changes to many websites. The titles or descriptions are links themselves and can be used to load the web page the user wants.

RSS starts with an original Web site that has content made available by the administrator. The website creates an RSS document and registers this content with an RSS publisher that will allow other websites to syndicate the documents. The Web site also produces an RSS feed, or channel, which is available together with all other resources or documents on the particular Web server. The website will register the feed as an RSS document, with a listed directory of appropriate RSS publishers.

An RSS feed is composed of website content listed from newest to oldest. Each item usually consists of a simple title describing the item along with a more complete description and a link to a web page with the actual content being described. In some instances, the short description or title line is the all the updated information that a user wants to read (for example, final games scores in sports, weblogs post, or stock updates). Therefore, it is not even necessary to have a web page associated with the content or update items listed -- sometimes all the needed information that users need would be in the titles and short summaries themselves.

The RSS content is located in a single file on a webpage in a manner not very different from typical web pages. The difference is that the information is written in the XML computer code for use by an RSS aggregator and not by a web user like a normal HTML page.

There are 2 main parts that are involved in RSS syndication, namely: the source end and the client end.

The client end of RSS publishing makes up part of the system that gathers and uses the RSS feed. For example, Mozilla FireFox browser is typically at the client end of the RSS transaction. A user’s desktop RSS aggregator program also belongs to the client end.

Once the URL of an RSS feed is known, a user can give that address to an RSS aggregator program and have the aggregator monitor the RSS feed for changes. Numerous RSS aggregators are already preconfigured with a ready list of RSS feed URLs for popular news or information websites that a user can simply choose from.

There are many RSS aggregators that can be used by all Internet users. Some can be accessed through the Internet, some are already incorporated into email applications, and others run as a standalone program inside the personal computer.

RSS feeds have evolved into many uses. Some uses gaining popularity are:

•For online store or retail establishments: Notification of new product arrivals
•For organization or association newsletters: title listings and notification of new issues, including email newsletters
•Weather Updates and other alerts of changing geographic conditions
•Database management: Notification of new items added, or new registered members to a club or interest group.

The uses of feeds will continue to grow, because RSS aggregators make access to any information that individual users like more convenient and fun.

How to Clean a Printer

by: Ray Geide

Does your printer have frequent paper jams? Does it put ink where ink shouldn't be? Is the outside of your printer dirty or covered with smudges? If so, it is time to clean your printer.

First, there are some general rules that apply to cleaning just about any electrical device. It is best to turn off the printer before cleaning it. Do not spray water or cleaner on or in the printer. Instead wet the rag with it and clean the printer with the rag.

Different types of printers require different cleaning methods. So if you can get your hands on cleaning instructions for your make and model of printer, do so and follow them. Unfortunately, many manufacturers only make that kind of information available to their licensed technicians. In that case, you are stuck with these instructions, so read on.

Open up your printer and take a look.

If you have an ink jet printer and there is an ink mess inside, clean it up with wet paper towels.

If you have a printer that uses toner either vacuum or blow it out. Some toner, especially color toner, can be harmful to you, so only use a vacuum with a micro-toner filter or blow and run. Figure out where the drum is (it is shiny and larger in diameter than the rollers) and do not touch or scratch it. If you do, the scratches will turn up as marks on every paper that you print and will require that you replace the drum (not a cheap option) to fix it.

Examine the path that the paper takes through the printer. Clean all of the rollers (but on a toner printer, not the drum or rollers near the drum and watch out for the rollers after the drum because they may be hot). It may take some disassembly and/or contorting of your arm to get to some of the rollers. Access is not always easy. The most important rollers to clean are the ones which pick up the paper from the paper bin and transfer it into the printer. If these rollers are dirty or bad, they will cause consistent paper jams.

The rollers are made of either hard plastic or rubber. All of the rollers can be cleaned with water or rubbing alcohol. If the rubber rollers have deposits that you can't get off, you can use harsher cleaners but be careful because those cleaners can damage the plastic rollers and parts.

To clean a roller, wipe across the roller with a wet rag, rotate the roller, and wipe again. Do this until you have worked your way all the way around the roller. Look at the rag. If it has been blackened by the roller, move to a clean part of the rag and clean the roller again.

Once everything is clean on the inside, close it up and clean the outside. Wipe off the case and each of the buttons or knobs. If there are staples or paper clips sitting on it or wedged in the cracks, remove them and throw them away.

Other areas of the printer can be cleaned but to do so, you will have to either get training and special tools or leave it to a trained professional.

Heart burn

Heartburn is a painful, burning sensation in the esophagus, just under the breastbone, that occurs after eating or at night. The pain often rises in the chest and radiates to the neck and throat. Caused by the regurgitation of gastric acid into the esophagus, heartburn is the most common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD. However, unlike occasional heartburn, GERD is a more serious condition that causes consistent heartburn for extended periods of time and often affects the quality of a person’s daily life.

Everyone experiences heartburn at some time or another, whether it’s triggered by spicy foods or eating a large meal. However, for people who suffer from GERD, heartburn occurs much more
frequently—often 2 or more times a week, lasting up to 3 months or longer.
In addition to seeking medical help, changes in habit and lifestyle can also help reduce the occurrence of heartburn. Common preventative measures include:

• Avoid lying down after eating or within 2 or 3 hours of bedtime
• Elevate the head of the bed 4 to 6 inches
• Quit smoking/using tobacco products
• Eat smaller, more frequent meals
• Lose weight if overweight
• Avoid aspirin and most pain medicines (other than acetaminophen)

Avoiding the following foods may also help reduce heartburn:

• Coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages
• Mint products, such as peppermint, spearmint, etc.
• Alcohol
• Carbonated beverages, citrus and fruit juices
• Chocolate
• Fried or fatty foods
• Tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard and vinegar
While one of the simplest treatments of heartburn/GERD is a change in lifestyle, other options range from over-the-counter antacids that neutralize stomach acid to prescribed medications that reduce acid regurgitation or block acid production. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to tighten the esophagus/stomach barrier.

If you’ve been experiencing consistent heartburn for an extended period of time, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor. Take the first step to getting the help you need by filling out the Evaluation Assessment below to determine the severity of your condition and the treatment options available to you.

Migraine

Introduction

Migraines are the most common type of vascular headaches and result in severe pain on one or both sides of the head, mostly around the temples or behind one eye or ear. Besides pain a person may experience nausea, vomiting and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. In some cases a sensory warning sign (aura), such as flashes of light, blind spots or tingling in one arm or leg, may precede or accompany the onset of a migraine headache. Migraines can occur at anytime, but they typically start in the morning and can last anywhere from several hours to several days.

Signs and Symptoms

Migraines can be divided into several different types, but classic and common migraines are the two most common. While both share similar symptoms, classic migraines are characterized by an aura before the migraine begins. Common aura signs include the following:

  • Visual disturbances, such as flashing lights (stars), zigzag lines or blind spots
  • Tingling sensations in one arm or leg
  • While rare, experiencing weakness or speech problems

Whether or not a person experiences an aura, other signs may occur several hours or days before a migraine starts:

  • Irritability or depression
  • Drowsiness
  • Cravings for sweets
  • Thirst
  • Feelings of elation or intense energy

Migraines can range from dull to severe, but a typical migraine attack results in some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Moderate to severe pain on one or both sides of the head
  • Throbbing, pounding or pulsating head pain
  • Fatigue
  • Extreme sensitivity to light and sound
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Pain that worsens with physical activity

Even after a migraine has subsided, some symptoms may still linger:

  • Neck pain and scalp tenderness
  • Increased need for sleep
  • Feeling mentally exhausted or dull

Causes

While researchers are still studying the cause of migraine headaches, the following factors are common among people who experience migraines:

  • Are between the ages of 15 and 55
  • Have a family history of migraine headaches
  • Are female; women are more affected by migraines than men
  • Have less severe and frequent migraines with age

Treatment and Triggers

Although doctors are still searching for a cure, various medications can be used to help control migraine pain; they can either be taken prophylactically (every day to reduce the severity and frequency of possible attacks) or abortively (once the headache begins). Lifestyle changes can also be used to help prevent migraine headaches, especially avoiding any trigger that may cause an attack. Listed below are some common triggers:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Bright lights, loud noises and certain odors or perfumes
  • Physical or emotional stress
  • Skipping meals
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Smoking or exposure to smoke
  • Alcohol
  • Menstrual cycle fluctuations and birth control pills
  • Tension headaches
  • Foods containing tyramine (red wine, aged cheese, smoked fish, chicken livers, figs and some beans), monosodium glutamate (MSG) or nitrates (like bacon, hot dogs and salami)
  • Other foods such as chocolate, nuts, peanut butter, avocado, banana, citrus, onions, dairy products and fermented or pickled foods

Other lifestyle changes, such as personal and family counseling, stress management and relaxation therapy, may also be recommended.

If you have been experiencing migraine pain, talk to your doctor to find out which treatment options are best for you.

When Will Mahalo Add Nofollow to Outbound Links?

Wikipedia is a powerhouse because

  • they have so much content
  • they don't run ads on their site
  • they turn users into evangelists by making it easy to contribute
  • they have so many inbound links
  • where possible they replace their outbound links with links to more internal Wikipedia pages (I just saw a page on performance based SEO pricing models, which seems outside the scope of the goals of an encyclopedia)
  • when they do link out they use nofollow

Nofollow is the flip side of paid links - you pay content creators for a while (with links), and then stop paying them while keeping their content.

In an attempt to follow Wikipedia's strategy (but with monetization) Mahalo...

  • is creating a bunch of easy to read how to articles (though I am not sure I would trust a guide covering how to invest online from a person who is willing to spend a couple days writing it, for less than $100)
  • now allows people to recommend links without logging in
  • allows anyone to create new pages

In the past couple years Google has killed many paid link sources, and stripped PageRank from most general directories and most article directories. Given how much harder it is got to get clean links, some SEOs will be tempted to add content to Mahalo hoping for the outbound reference link, but in a year Mahalo will likely claim they need use nofollow to stop spam, so the opportunity is probably fleeting.

Social Network Theory

The more I learn about the field of SEO the more it feels like public relations and the less it feels like anything to do with machines, algorithms, or search engines. I am soft launching a blog about social stuff called social network theory.

Not so much Digg spamming sorta stuff, but tips and ideas about how social networks work from my limited understanding thusfar. In time I hope to read lots of books on the subject and related subjects like behavioral economics and linguistics. The blog might just be a fling, or it might turn into more if I really get into the topic. SEO Book will still be my main venture for the foreseeable future.

Does SEO Consulting Have a Future?

a chip in the sugar

Try not to look like a country bug. Blend. Blend in.
- Flik, A Bug’s Life

The complexity of SEO, the forensic nature of parsing words and matching lines, is a hard sell. How do you describe it without sounding like Lou Grant, as opposed to a can-do service provider? PPC is transparent, measureable, a better market to focus on.

SEO versus PPC. Experiential versus rational processing. Intuition versus logic.

Once upon a time, there was no ‘versus’, no sound of a hair, splitting. Just SEO and PPC. Now, as the online market matures, limbs get minds of their own, and the question becomes, “Which would you prefer, working in organic search or working in PPC?” And I say, “Organic search” (because I’m trying to be cool). But I mean, “PPC” (because I need to eat).

And I also speak today, because I can’t help it, about the parallels I see in the evolution of the online marketing sector today, buffeted by a recession (petty distinctions among the econ gurus aside) as a mirror of the games development industry in 2000, buffeted by the dot com deflation.

Why Pay-Per-Click is Important

Pay-per-click marketing allows you to test in real time. Conversely, the more expensive the associated PPC ads are, the more value there is in performing SEO on a site in a paid niche.

Why Traditional SEO Consulting Tires Easily

In a frontier, we few settlers have the time and space to hold hands, to tame the beasties. With online marketing, the elastic mindshare stretches ever outwards, and how a client interacts with the media and people in their marketplace (and here I’m thinking particularly of social marketing, semantic search etc.), rapidly morphs as time delivers a consumer and producer net-literate family – we will watch our care grow surly, independent and, oddly enough (or maybe not oddly at all), conservative and risk-averse.

Oh dear.

As SEO movers and shakers, then, our assumed mantle of progenitors will, as history teaches, count for nought; it will be up to us to change. Again.

But, here’s the thing: companies and corporates, for all their twittering on about flat management structures, are hierarchical, irrespective of how big the base or how shallow the pyramid. And I mention this because, at this stage in the evolution of the search marketing industry, the internal architecture of a company cannot accommodate what is, at this moment in time, an essentially horizontal agent – the SEO analyst. You can tell that companies are caught in the headlights of oncoming online traffic, because they invariably advertise for an online marketing manager “....reporting to the Marketing Manager.”

Ah lads, get a grip.

I have faced grown marketing managers across the mahogany tables of traditional sales and marketing lairs, lilac carpets bristling with empathetic static, as their watership down eyes peer into mine, pleading with me to answer that question normally reserved for their newly-appointed, crabbid-out CEO, but now commandeered almost exclusively on the appointment of an online marketing executive, “What the hell am I supposed to do with him....?”

Empathy is a shared keyword. You hear a lot of talk about empathy. Perhaps, as an online marketer, I can admit to valuing the relationship with the Client more than the relationship with the product. Liking the Client drives motivation. I wouldn’t worry about it – it’s a growing pain.

The point is, search results – the kind that the Client wants – are predicated on future, not current, ambitions. Marketing managers, and their staff – they implement based on what’s coming down the product pipeline. The Head of Search Marketing, on the other hand, is required to be at the conception of the new ambition, before the specifications are written, at the point where the Boss wakes up in bed in a cold sweat, turns, and, leaning over his (shhh, sleeping) Corporate Body, whispers to his online acquisition principal (who, convinced that he as ‘a bit of all right’, as opposed to being, quite literally, just ‘a bit on the side,’ is patiently consuming lines of shifting search engine algorithms under a night-light livid with the colour of validation), “I think I know where this is going to next.”

Yummy.

With marketing managers, size matters; we, on the other hand, console ourselves with the thought that it’s what you do with it that counts. Traditional marketers view adrenaline as a reward; we view it as a rival for our charms. Design versus dasein. A chip in the sugar.

Which reminds me: epistemology and metaphysics, logic, semantics – we need philosophers, not technologists (whatever they are). And still we repeat the sins of our forebears, when online games recruitment banged on about quote having a passion for gaming unquote, until it copped itself on and realised that what games development needed were full sets of feet to march forward upon, not more ingrown toenails. Perhaps even we can teach the old dog new tricks.

Less self-regard, more oxygen. To paraphrase William Goldman about another all-sex, zero-foreplay industry, nobody knows everything.

Why Traditional SEO Consulting Will Persevere

Businesses that value their online objectives will be clever enough to realise that you can internalise process, you can internalise implementation, but you must outsource strategy, you must outsource training, you must outsource mentoring, you must hold your nerve, be sufficiently confident to absorb externals telling you what needs to be done – and what doesn’t. The only people I know who can provide that level of service are people who value what they have learned from their mistakes more than their successes. Scars versus skills. SEO versus PPC.

Cor. And blimey.

Blogging: Does Your Blog Need A Proofreader?

By Alyice Edrich

As writers and business entrepreneurs, do you always PROOF your posts or comments? Do you spend hours agonizing over the content on your posts only to decide not to post? Do wonder what would happen if you forgot to include a comma or used a hyphen in the wrong spot? Do you wonder if one misspelled word is going to cause you to look less professional?

Well wonder no more! The cyber police aren’t going to come banging down your door to fine you for improper grammar usage and unless your post is riddled with inconsistencies, huge grammatical issues, or hard to read sentence structures, your readers aren’t going to care, either.

Blogging isn’t like traditional publishing. Every “i” doesn’t have to be dotted. Every “t” doesn’t have to be crossed. And every comma doesn’t have to be in its proper place. After all, in traditional publishing more than one set of eyes has gone over that reading material before it hits publication. When work is submitted to traditional publications, editors come back with requests to improve or clarify the work based on recommendations from their proofreaders and/or copyeditors. With blogging, there are usually no second pair of eyes.

Blogging isn’t about being “error-free”, though it couldn’t hurt. Blogging is about spontaneity. It’s about communicating with your readers on a more personal level. It’s about engaging in a conversation with your past, present, and future customers. It’s about sharing insights and showing a more human side to your business. It’s about being real. And being real comes with mistakes—grammatical or otherwise.

So go ahead and post. Post daily. Because the truth of the matter is this: If you spend your time fretting over every typo or grammatical mistake, you will never take part in this fascinating community of bloggers. And you’ll lose out. You’ll lose networking opportunities. You’ll lose viral marketing opportunities. And you’ll lose the awesome ability to build “friendships” with your readers and connect with your customers on a level you’ve never imagined. And you’ll lose the financial benefits of indirect sales.

And if you should receive an email informing you of a misspelled word, the wrong word usage, improper punctuation, and so forth, thank the reader, edit your post, and move on. In time, you’ll discover that your writing has vastly improved and you’ll feel less conscientious about your writing skills and more confident in the content you produce.

The Three Fatal Flaws of Blogging

There are, of course, some highly successful blogs. Well-done, news-oriented blogs, for example. And blogs that are not really "blogs" in the usual sense but that merely use the software to build more traditional Theme-Based Content Sites. In both cases, it takes the truly exceptional to succeed without a complete step-by-step process and all the tools needed to execute flawlessly.

These successes are the exceptions that prove the rule of blog failure. There are fundamental reasons why typical blogs fail in such high numbers...

newspaper stack Fatal Flaw #1) Blogs Do Not Deliver Useful Information Resources

A blog is like a stack of hundreds of dated back issues of newspapers. Aside from "today's snippet," blogs are generally not useful resources for information. And information is what people search for; it's what they crave on the Web.

Blog posts are created and stored in chronological order. A good blogger will produce a post that is useful today, but who will read it in three months? Even when bloggers go to the extra effort of archiving their posts by "keyword categories," the articles are dated and not rewritten into coherent definitive articles. Usefulness plummets with time.

How does a Theme-Based Content Site differ? Instead of a stack of old newspapers, each resembles a good resource book about its theme, composed of useful, original articles ("Web pages") that cover related topics in some depth. Written in each small-business owners's unique voice, and based upon that person's experience in the field, they are useful resources that visitors return to over and over.

To summarize, Theme-Based Content Sites are evergreen, useful and usable, long-term momentum-builders. Blogs are short-term "today's snippets." The differing results are profound

Humans respond to blogs and Theme-Based Content sites differently. And Google measures those reactions in hundreds of ways, rewarding your ranking accordingly. That is why Theme-Based Content sites are easier to create and build longer-lasting traffic. Continuing this analysis...

Fatal Flaw #2) Blogging Navigation and Internal Organization Are Inherently Awkward

Generally, blogs have no immediately logical organization of material by categorical tiers, sub-tiers, etc. At best, there may be a collection of "keywords" under which posts are filed. The various posts on a topic are never pulled together into cohesive articles, since they generally start as news pieces or thoughts of the day.

Theme-Based Content Sites are organized more logically. And Web pages are updated, not re-issued as new posts. These sites are easier to find and are simpler and more fruitful to explore by your "human" visitors (your pre-customers!).

And what about your "spider" visitors (the Search Engines)? Site Build It! makes it supremely easy for all engines to spider and list your pages. And critically, superior human response becomes obvious to all engines (as mentioned by Google itself above).

"Spider and human" work synergistically together to build substantially greater long-term traffic momentum. And the beauty is that all you have to do is "keep it real." This has nothing to do with "SEO" or any kind of Search Engine manipulation. The results are natural, long-lasting, and evergrowing.

Fatal Flaw #3) Blogs Do Not Meet the Natural Needs of Most Small Business Opportunities

Some fields of business lend themselves well to blogging. For example, there is an overload of bloggers covering and commenting on even the most minute developments in the fast-moving, Web-savvy field of Internet marketing. Most of it is "noise" that will ultimately mean nothing. Nevertheless, "Net marketing" is a natural for blogging.

But the nature of your business and its related subject matter is most likely inappropriate for blogging. Your own business is almost certainly better served by a Theme-Based Content Site. Why? Because your future customers will be better served by information delivered in this manner. Theme-Based Content Sites flex to meet the goals, knowledge and circumstances of everyone...

Whether you are a dentist or asphalt sealer...

Whether you are a copywriter or java programmer...

Or perhaps you are a stay-at-home mom or pre-retiree who wants to start an online business from scratch...

Whatever your business or plans, build a Theme-Based Content Site, not a blog.

Here's how to get off to a great start, to understand how and why only this approach builds a profitable online business, no matter what that business may be...
